China will face repercussions if it assists Russia in evading sanctions during its invasion of Ukraine.

Ukraine Crisis: Unnamed US sources reportedly told numerous news sites that once the invasion began, Russia requested military aid from China. China’s foreign ministry has accused the United States of circulating false information. Russia has denied that it has requested military assistance from Beijing. The discussions took place ahead of a meeting in Rome between top US and Chinese officials.

According to US media reports, Russia has approached China for military equipment, including drones, in recent days, citing Washington sources.

In a CNN interview, US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said they were “communicating directly, privately to Beijing that there will absolutely be consequences for large-scale sanctions evasion efforts or support to Russia to backfill them”.

In response, Zhao Lijian, a spokeswoman for Beijing’s foreign ministry, said the US has “been disseminating disinformation against China on the Ukraine issue, with malevolent motives.” When asked if China had received a request for military assistance from Russia, Mr Zhao dismissed the claim as “false news,” but did not explicitly refute it.

He went on to say that China’s position has always been constant, and that the country is actively pushing dialogue. Dmitry Peskov, a spokesperson for Russian President Vladimir Putin, denied allegations that Russia had requested military assistance from China. “Russia has the capability to continue the operation on its own. As previously stated, everything is moving according to plan, and the project will be completed on schedule and in full “he stated.

On Monday in Rome, Mr. Sullivan met Yang Jiechi, the head of the Central Foreign Affairs Commission and a member of China’s top decision-making body, the Politburo. There was no word on what they talked about right away.

Before the meeting began, Reuters reported that Mr Sullivan would lay out the risks and isolation that China would face if it extended its support for Russia.
