Rajasthan Royals hold nerve to win by three runs against Chennai Super Kings in a thrilling encounter

Rajasthan Royals survive a last-over assault by MS Dhoni to win the match by three runs against Chennai Super Kings at Chepauk. After being put in to bat, Rajasthan Royals scored 175-8 with Shimron Hetmyer top-scoring with 30 runs off 18 balls. In reply, Chennai Super Kings lost wickets at regular intervals, with skillful spin bowling by Rajasthan Royals triggering a middle-order collapse, as the required rate touched 10 runs per over. Ravindra Jadeja and MS Dhoni provided a glimmer of hope to the home team, but Sandeep Sharma’s nerveless execution of three successive yorkers at the death meant that Rajasthan Royals emerged victorious.

Rajasthan Royals got off to a good start after being put in to bat, but lost Yashasvi Jaiswal early. Jos Buttler tried to accelerate the scoring rate with some lusty blows, hitting Moeen Ali for three sixes in an over, but was caught by Ali off Dwayne Bravo. Wickets fell regularly at the other end, but Shimron Hetmyer’s quickfire 30 off 18 balls lifted the Royals to a competitive 175-8.

Chennai Super Kings began their chase well with Ruturaj Gaikwad and Ajinkya Rahane taking the score to 45-1 in the powerplay after Gaikwad’s dismissal. However, Rajasthan Royals spinners started to strangle the opposition, with Ashwin trapping Rahane in front for a 19-ball 31. The next three overs saw a dramatic middle-order collapse, triggered by some skilful spin bowling by the Royals, getting rid of Rahane, Dube, Moeen, Rayudu, and Conway, in a collapse that read 5-35.

However, Ravindra Jadeja and MS Dhoni showed great resilience and experience to play out the spinners and take the game deep. Jadeja hammered 19 runs off the 19th over before MS Dhoni went on the attack in the final over, bringing the equation down from 19 off 5 to 7 off 3. Sandeep Sharma held his nerve and executed three successive yorkers to deny CSK a fairy-tale finish on a special day, as Rajasthan Royals won the match by three(3) runs.
