Following her death at the age of 75, Indian cinema and stage diva Surekha Sikri was characterized as a “top-class actor” and a “force of nature.”

In Mumbai, the veteran, Surekha, who was known for films like Badhaai Ho, TV shows like Balika Vadhu, and many Hindi theater performances, died of cardiac arrest. Between 1988 and 2018, Sikri won three National Film Awards and appeared in the popular soap Balika Vadhu for eight years. She’d been sick for a while, having suffered two strokes in the previous four years.

“Surekha Sikri-A fearless actress:

Sikri, a New Delhi native, won National Film Awards for Tamas, Mammo, and Badhaai Ho, among other films. “She was such a superb actor that whatever character you gave her she would own it,” Shyam Benegal, who worked with her on Mammo, told the Press Trust of India. “She was equally at ease in sympathetic and non-sympathetic parts. She was a professional performer of the highest caliber.”

In the 2018 film Badhaai Ho, Neena Gupta, who played Sikri’s daughter-in-law, stated the actress was one of her heroines. “I remember sneaking in and watching her act when I was a student at the National School of Drama,” she wrote on Instagram. “I used to think I wanted to be an actor like her.”

Her Zubeidaa co-star Manoj Bajpayee described her as “a treat to witness on stage” and “a charming individual.” Pooja Bhatt, an actress and producer, called Sikri “a force of nature if ever there was one.” “Thus, instead of saying rest in peace, I’ll say rage in peace Surekhaji,” she wrote on Twitter. “Just as you did throughout your time on this planet!”

“She has been suffering from problems emanating from a second brain stroke,” Sikri’s manager told The Indian Express on Friday. “She was surrounded by her loved ones as well as her carers. At this time, the family requests privacy.”
