Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) clinched a much-needed victory over Punjab Kings (PBKS) in their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 encounter at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
The eight-wicket win sees SRH climb up to the sixth position in the IPL points table, while PBKS slips down to fourth.
PBKS opener Shikhar Dhawan was the standout performer in the match, scoring an unbeaten 99 off just 64 balls, including 11 fours and 4 sixes. He single-handedly led the charge for PBKS after they were struggling at 78/8 at one stage. However, T Natarajan of SRH denied him his century in a brilliant last over, conceding just 6 runs and dismissing Harpreet Brar.
Chasing a modest target of 144, SRH got off to a poor start, losing opener Harry Brook for 10 in the second over of the innings. However, Rahul Tripathi and Aiden Markram steadied the ship with a 78-run partnership for the second wicket. Tripathi was particularly impressive, scoring a brisk 64 off 36 balls, which included 7 fours and 3 sixes, while Markram contributed with a valuable 37 off 34 balls. Arshdeep Singh was the only bowler to have some success for PBKS, finishing with figures of 2/25 in his 4 overs.
In the second half, SRH continued to dominate as Tripathi took charge with some terrific shots. He kept going against the spin and took on Mohit in an over that saw the leggie concede 21. Tripathi’s onslaught helped SRH stage a comeback, and they won the match with 17 balls to spare.
The win will be a huge morale booster for SRH, who had lost their first two matches of the tournament. Their next match is against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on April 13, while PBKS will take on Rajasthan Royals (RR) on April 15.
Overall, it was a fantastic performance by SRH, who desperately needed a win after losing their first two matches. With this win, they move up to the sixth spot in the IPL points table. On the other hand, PBKS suffered their first loss of the tournament and slip down to third place. Despite the loss, Dhawan’s knock of 99* was one of the best in the history of IPL, and he deservedly won the Man of the Match award for his efforts.
