Please lend us your ears, 90s kids. Shaktimaan is about to return, and this time on the big screen, so expect a wave of nostalgia. Sony Pictures India released the first trailer for the film based on the Indian superhero on Thursday. The one-minute film begins with a view of the globe, followed by a busy street. “As darkness and evil rule over humanity, it’s time for him to return,” it continues. The Shaktimaan symbol appears shortly after, and we catch a glimpse of our superhero. While Shaktimaan’s face isn’t disclosed, the makers do give a glimpse of the’most beloved and loved superhero.’ The ‘people’s hero’s’ clothing and physique appear to have evolved to match the many action stars on film.
“It’s time for our desi Superhero!” the studio tweeted alongside the trailer, “after the phenomenal success of our previous superhero films in India and around the world!” Shaktimaan, India’s own superhero, will be adapted for the big screen shortly, according to Sony Pictures’ acquisition of the character’s film adaptation rights.

According to a statement released by Sony Pictures International Productions, they have purchased the film adaptation rights to Shaktimaan in order to remake it as a superhero trilogy for the big screen. The cast for the film has yet to be confirmed, and the director’s name has yet to be determined.
For Shaktiman, the studio has teamed together with actor-producer Mukesh Khanna’s Bheeshm International and Brewing Thoughts Private Limited (co-founded by ex-film journalist Prashant Singh and Madhurya Vinay). Shaktimaan first aired on Doordarshan in September 1997 and ran for eight years. Mukesh Khanna, who performed the titular part, came up with the idea after seeing children in his family enjoying superhero cartoons on television. The team is confident that the film will heat up the Indian superhero arena and become a global success from India, given how much the program is loved by fans.
Mukesh Khanna came up with the character in the early 1980s. In a 1997 interview with Screen Magazine, the actor stated, “There are many strong figures in Indian mythology, but no super-heroes. All we get to see are foreign concepts like Superman or Spiderman. That’s why I decided to develop Shaktimaan, an Indian superhero who is the result of all the universe’s creative energy and is created from a yagna.”
The actor announced in 2020 that a film trilogy based on the character will be filmed, stating that it would be “greater than Ra.One and Krrish.”
