Russia attacks ukraine’s zaporizhzhia nuclear reactor, europe’s largest

Russia: After Russian military attacked a nuclear power plant and caused a fire, world leaders have accused Russia of risking the safety of an entire continent. After what Ukrainian authorities claimed was a Russian attack, a fire broke out at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear reactor, Europe’s largest.

The fire, which started in a structure outside the plant’s perimeter, was put out by Ukraine’s emergency services, but authorities claim that Russian troops have taken control of the facility. Russia’s “reckless” action, according to UK Prime Minister Boris Jonson, might “directly jeopardize the safety of all of Europe.

President Joe Biden of the United States has asked Moscow to suspend military activity near the location, while Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has warned that Russia’s “horrific strikes” must “end immediately.

Russia attacks Ukraine's nuclear plant

We’ve heard from a dancing teacher in Zaporizhzhia, where Russian military have taken control of a nuclear power plant. He told the BBC’s Today show that he saw Russian military personnel shooting and launching explosives at the plant all night.

“I know one of the buildings was on fire, but it wasn’t the nuclear power plant; instead, it was a residential building. It’s still horrible news, but at least it’s not the reactor itself.” He said, “It is a source of concern not just for our region, but also for Ukraine and the rest of the world, as it is one of Europe’s largest nuclear power plants, as far as I am aware.

“It’s absurd, it’s plain terrorism; there are no words to describe it; the entire world should oppose it.

Boris Johnson, the British Prime Minister, has summoned an emergency UN Security Council meeting in New York to “intensify the pressure on Putin’s war machine.” Staff are apparently allowed to remain on the plant and continue working while monitoring the power units. Along with Chernobyl, this is the second nuclear site to fall under Russian control.

Russian soldiers are heading from the north towards Kyiv, bypassing cities like Chernihiv and Sumy that are currently under intense shelling and fighting – and the fear is that Ukraine’s capital, Russia’s ultimate objective in this assault, will soon experience the same effect.
