Lionel Messi missed Saturday’s Ligue 1 match against Reims due to a minor calf injury he picked up in last week’s 1-1 draw in Portugal.

Due to an injury, Lionel Messi of PSG will miss this week’s home Champions League matchup against Benfica, club sources told AFP on Monday. The 35-year-old Argentine superstar missed Saturday’s Ligue 1 match at Reims after picking up a minor calf injury in last week’s 1-1 draw in Portugal.
For the match on Tuesday in Paris, PSG will also be missing midfielder Renato Sanches, defenders Presnel Kimpembe and Nuno Mendes, and goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois. On the basis of goals scored during the group stages, they are ahead of Benfica, a two-time winner of the European Cup, in Group H.
After failing to go past the round of 16 in the previous season’s Champions League, the 35-year-old is out of chances to add to his collection of championships. He has scored in both of the most recent group games against Maccabi Haifa and Benfica, but it appears like he won’t play in the rematch against the Portuguese powerhouse.
Le Parisien (via Get French Football News) reports that Messi missed PSG’s Monday training session, thereby putting him out of Tuesday’s home match against Benfica. The former Barcelona player missed Saturday’s scoreless draw with Reims, but there was optimism that he could be ready to play again following a “minor” calf injury.
PSG will be hoping the ex-Barcelona forward is healthy for Sunday’s high-stakes Ligue 1 match against bitter rivals Marseille. The forward has missed just one of PSG’s 14 games in all competitions this season.
