Pele, the legendary Brazilian footballer, is “recovering nicely” after being briefly readmitted to intensive care after a recent operation, according to his daughter.
The 80-year-old Pele was released from intensive care on Wednesday after undergoing surgery to remove a tumor from his intestines earlier this month. He was readmitted “as a preventative measure,” according to the Albert Einstein Hospital in Sao Paulo. “He’s doing great and is back to normal,” Kely Nascimento added.
He had been receiving treatment at the hospital since the tumor was discovered during routine examinations on August 31. Pele was reportedly readmitted to intensive care as a precaution due to his age, according to Brazilian media. The hospital later confirmed this in a statement, adding, “The patient was transferred to semi-intensive care after stabilization.”

“From a cardiovascular and respiratory perspective, he is currently stable.” His daughter wrote on Instagram before the hospital statement was released: “I’m not sure what’s going on with the rumors, but my DMs are exploding!!! “There is already a great deal of concern in the world these days, and we don’t want to add to it.
“After a procedure like this, the usual recovery prognosis for a man his age is two steps ahead and one step back.” It’s quite natural. “He was exhausted the other day and made a step back. He took two steps forward today!”
Pele’s health has been a source of concern in recent years; he underwent prostate surgery in 2015 after being brought to the hospital for the second time in six months, and he was hospitalized again in 2019 for a urinary infection. With 77 goals in 92 appearances, Pele is Brazil’s all-time leading scorer and one of just four players to score in four World Cup competitions.
