By defeating New Zealand by seven wickets, Pakistan has advanced to a third T20 World Cup final.
Three days prior, Pakistan was virtually eliminated from the competition and needed a miracle from The Netherlands to defeat South Africa and then defeat Bangladesh and now they are in the semifinals beating New Zealand.
Netherlands prevailed. Likewise Pakistan, they are currently in the World Cup final. Daryl Mitchell and Kane Williamson’s outstanding rearguard effort helped New Zealand, which had won the toss and elected to bat, struggle on a sluggish, dry track, making 4-152 in large part (46 off 42).
However, Pakistan had the ideal foundation from which to reach their target, achieving it easily with six balls to spare thanks to a century stand for the first wicket between Babar Azam (53) and Muhammad Rizwan (57).
At the MCG, where they won the ODI World Cup in 1992, Pakistan will now play either England or India.
The fact that New Zealand had destroyed Australia on the same field a few weeks prior to the game would have given them confidence going into the contest.
The omens were in their favor even before they won the toss because five of the six teams who chose to bat first at the SCG in T20 matches had won. However, they were never really in the game when playing against a motivated Pakistani team.
