North Korea missile test believed to be its largest missile launch since 2017.
North Korea: The weapon was reportedly an intermediate-range missile that flew to a height of 2,000 kilometers before crashing into the Sea of Japan. The launch, which was the seventh this month, was criticized by Japan, South Korea, and the United States.
North Korea is prohibited from testing ballistic and nuclear missiles by the United Nations, which has imposed severe sanctions. However, North Korea repeatedly ignores the prohibition, and its leader, Kim Jong-un, has promised to strengthen his country’s defenses. Experts believe the spate of launches is due to a combination of factors, including political signaling of strength to global and regional countries, Kim Jong-wish un’s to re-engage the US in long-stalled nuclear discussions, and the practical requirement to test new engineering and military command systems.

The timing is particularly critical, as it comes soon before the Winter Olympics in China and before the presidential election in South Korea in March.
Furthermore, the number of testing has increased as North Korea’s economy struggles amid US-led sanctions, pandemic-related challenges, and decades of mismanagement.
The launch occurred at 07:52 local time on Sunday (22:52 GMT) off North Korea’s east coast, according to South Korea.
According to Japanese and South Korean officials, the missile soared to a height of 2,000 kilometers (1240 miles) and flew for 30 minutes to a distance of 800 kilometers (500 miles).North Korea was urged to “refrain from additional destabilizing activities” by the US.
With five short-range missiles thrown into the sea, January was already one of the busiest months on record for North Korea’s missile program.

Moon Jae-in, the president of South Korea, compared the new round of testing to the heightened tensions in 2017, when North Korea conducted several nuclear tests and fired its largest missiles, some of which flew over Japan. The missile appears to be comparable to the Hwasong-12 missile that the North tested last year, according to Yonhap, a South Korean news agency.
