New World is the most popular PC game right now. What you should know about it is as follows.
If you’re even a casual gamer, you’ve most likely heard the term “New World” spoken in the last week. The long-awaited game finally launched on Wednesday, after numerous delays. It’s being created by Amazon Games, which makes it a high-stakes release for the e-commerce behemoth given the failure of its last title Crucible.
A massively multiplayer online game’s success may only be determined months or years after its release, but New World is off to a promising start. According to Steam stats, New World has more concurrent players and Twitch watchers than any other game right now. On Wednesday, almost 700,000 people were playing New World on Steam, a record set by only a few titles.
What is New World?
New World is an exclusive PC-only fantasy MMO game developed by Amazon Games. It has all of the trappings you’d expect from a high-budget MMO in 2021 (and you know Amazon has a large budget): a massive globe with diverse settings, a variety of modes including player-versus-player and player-versus-environment (PvP and PvE in MMO speak), and extensive roleplaying choices.
It is set on the mythical island of Aeternum in the Atlantic Ocean. You take on the role of an explorer attempting to colonize the island, but you soon discover that Aeternum is home to a mysterious substance known as Azoth. Azoth not only turns the local fauna and flora against you, but it also brings back to life the dead explorers who came to Aeternum before you. In essence, the island is attempting to murder you. To fight back, you’ll use Azoth’s strength.
You can join one of three factions when you first start: The Marauders, The Syndicate, or The Covenant. Companies (what would be a guild or clan in another game) exist inside each faction, and you can join them. Companies can band together to take over communities strewn over Aeternum, which can then be transformed into player cities that you must defend. The Corrupted, The Lost, The Ancient, and The Angry Earth all have four computer-controlled groups. The player-controlled groups are frequently at odds, and you’ll be forced to choose a side and participate in these fights.

The feedback on launch day was mixed, however many of the bad reviews on Steam are related to the long lines to get onto New World’s servers. While critics’ reviews are still coming in, New World has drawn a large number of gamers. (As a result, the server queues.
New World is currently the most played and viewed PC game on the planet. On Steam, it has 542,000 concurrent gamers, and over 620,000 people are watching Twitch New World streams at the time of writing (compared to 230,000 for Grand Theft Auto 5 and 110,000 for Apex Legends).
