The Met Gala is fashion’s big night out, and celebrities are notorious for saving their most eye-catching clothes for the red carpet, which is frequently rather dramatic.
Because of the pandemic-related delay, it’s been less than eight months since the stars descended on the Metropolitan Museum of Art for the (usually) annual fundraiser, giving designers less time to consider the event’s dress code: “Gilded Glamour and White Tie.” In keeping with the Costume Institute’s companion two-part show, “In America: An Anthology of Fashion,” the theme is scheduled to continue the examination of American style in 2021.
First Lady Dr. Jill Biden offered introductory remarks at the Met’s press briefing before the banquet, emphasizing American design’s “rich and deep” heritage. “It’s a story of rebellion and renewal, of inventiveness and ingenuity,” she remarked. “It’s often written by folks who aren’t acknowledged for their influence or work, but their tales are recounted here at the Met. Their voices have been raised, and their work has the opportunity to shine.”
Congratulations to New York City Commissioner of the Department of Cultural Affairs @CommishCumbo and Bobby Digi Olisa who got engaged on the #MetGala red carpet tonight. ❤️✨ An amazing moment on an amazing night! pic.twitter.com/A8Uy5vRxUK— The Metropolitan Museum of Art (@metmuseum) May 3, 2022

Prior to the red carpet on Monday evening, Tommy Hilfiger, one of the most iconic American designers whose work is featured in the exhibition, told CNN that the event gave designers a chance to “showcase their distinct interpretations of fashion and pop culture.” “I always enjoy watching how designers interpret the concept with their own originality, identity, and twist,” Hilfiger stated in an email. “At the Met Gala, it’s all about thinking outside the box and keeping an open mind.”
The fundraiser’s combination of high fashion and broad appeal, according to former Yeezy designer Maisie Schloss, who now owns her own LA-based label Maisie Wilen, makes it a “unique” red carpet. “I hope visitors bring out their most opulent yet fun ensembles,” she said via email, adding that “the events enjoyed by industry insiders and the masses alike enable for peak inventiveness.”
