Due to the ongoing pandemic, this year’s Met Gala was a smaller, more private occasion, with just roughly a third of the regular guest list invited to participate in fashion’s biggest night.
Despite this, there was no shortage of great Americana fashions on the red carpet. The theme for this year’s Met Gala is “American Independence,” which allowed participants a wide range of options to choose from, including powdered wigs and star-spangled dresses for founding fathers, Lady Liberty costumes, and, of course, all things red, white, and blue.
The Met Gala, dubbed the “Oscar Night” of the fashion industry, takes place on the first Monday in May every year. However, after taking a year off due to the pandemic, the star-studded event will return in 2021 on the second Monday in September as an even more exclusive affair than before.
Given that the event’s accompanying exhibition features 70 percent new American designers, the majority of whom have never been invited to the Gala, never alone exhibited in a museum, Timothée Chalamet, poet Amanda Gorman, Billie Eilish, and Naomi Osaka are this year’s co-chairs of fashion’s most famous night. The red carpet this year also has its own hosts. Keke Palmer and Ilana Glazer will take us through the entire red carpet experience.
