Manchester City defeated Manchester United 4-1, with Kevin de Bruyne scoring twice and Riyad Mahrez scoring twice.

When Ralf Rangnick and his team traveled to the Etihad, it was a game of two halves. The away side went into halftime a goal down, but with reason for confidence, thanks to a brace from Kevin De Bruyne, which was punctuated by a curling strike from Jadon Sancho. Despite the fact that Manchester City were the better team in the first half, with a definite focus on targeting United’s right flank, the Red Devils may take some positives and hope into the second half. They had a good organization and were good at gaining the ball back in midfield. An equalising goal didn’t appear to be in the cards, and despite the fact that it was early in the game, they were still in it.

That, however, was going to alter. Guardiola’s team immediately increased the tempo in the second half, and United struggled to keep up. It was easy for City to play through the visitors when they pressed, and the second half swiftly settled into a regular rhythm. In their own half, City passed the ball about. United pushed forward to press them, but City exploited the situation.

With David De Gea’s inability to pass to a teammate compounding the visitors’ troubles, it seemed only a matter of time before the hosts dispatched their guests. After his teammate’s crowded the six yard area to allow him with room, Mahrez found space on the side of the area to guide the ball home.

Goals:

Mahrez (Gundogan) — 90th min.

Mahrez (De Bruyne) — 69th min.

De Bruyne — 28th min.

Sancho (Pogba) — 22nd min.

De Bruyne (Bernardo) — 5th min.

His shot was deflected by Harry Maguire, who, like many of his colleagues, had a game to forget. The city continued arriving, and they never felt like they were losing control. They were walking at a slow speed, and the game was over in twenty minutes. Towards the death, Mahrez made it four by blasting the ball at David De Gea, who was injured when it touched him before falling in the back of the net. They had plenty of chances to score their fourth before that, with many opportunities to truly punish their opponents missed.

It’s been a terrific day for City, who are still six points ahead of Liverpool despite having played one more game. The season has a dismal picture for Manchester United. They have three more games under their belt than Arsenal and Tottenham. Arsenal leads them by a point and has a higher goal differential, while Tottenham is only five points behind. West Ham have played the same number of games as United and are only two points behind Rangnick’s side, with United having a poorer goal difference.
