Manchester City has won the Premier League for the fourth time in five seasons, but it was far from simple.

Manchester City wins the premier league 2022 title

Manchester City won their second consecutive Premier League title by defeating Aston Villa 3–2 and holding off Liverpool’s assault on the last day of the season, overturning a late two-goal deficit with three goals in five historic minutes. After falling behind 2–0 against Villa, it appeared that City would lose the title, but everything changed when lkay Gündoan scored in the 76th minute. Rodri equalized two minutes later, before Gündoan added his second, which proved to be the game-winner.

Man City had left the door open for the Reds by drawing West Ham and surrendering two crucial points last weekend, and Jürgen Klopp’s side brought it to the final day with a come-from-behind win at Southampton on Tuesday with a largely rotated squad. However, they fall one point shy of first place for the second time in four seasons.

Liverpool’s quest for a historic quadruple is over, with the team having already won the League Cup and FA Cup (beating Chelsea in penalty shootouts for both domestic trophies), as well as reaching the Champions League final. On May 28, it will face Real Madrid in Paris for the European title.

Given its ravenous desire to become European champion, Man City would certainly swap places with Liverpool, but it will instead settle for another English crown. It marks the club’s sixth Premier League title and eighth overall, breaking a tie with Aston Villa for fourth place all-time. With Erling Haaland set to arrive from Borussia Dortmund next season, that figure might continue to rise dramatically in the coming years.

However, this season’s success was achieved without the use of a great striker. Man City failed to replace Sergio Agüero after its summer attempts to sign Tottenham’s Harry Kane were unsuccessful. Despite this, Pep Guardiola’s team has scored a league-high 99 goals, led by Kevin De Bruyne (15), Raheem Sterling (13), and Riyad Mahrez (11). Gabriel Jesus (nine), Phil Foden (nine), and Bernardo Silva (eight) were also important players, with half of Jesus’ total coming in a win over relegated Watford.

City only lost three times in league play, twice to Tottenham (the first time in the season’s first game) and once to Crystal Palace, who also held City to a tie in their other encounter. The club, on the other hand, grabbed points from every other team in the league, and had a 12-match winning streak at one point, cementing its position atop the table.

Liverpool did come back from a double-digit point deficit to briefly grab the lead, but City, as has been the case throughout Guardiola’s tenure, produced the necessary reaction to reclaim the title.
