According to Deadline, Warner Bros. has found its Batgirl in Leslie Grace of “In the Heights”. In the new HBO Max film, the 26-year-old actress will play Barbara Gordon and her superhero alter-ego.
While little is known about the plot, we do know that the film will center on the Barbara Gordon version of the character rather than any of the other Batgirls who have donned the cape in the comics.
This means Batgirl will be the daughter (or niece, depending on which portion of the chronology you’re using) of police commissioner Jim Gordon, who has yet to be cast in the film. Gordon was last seen in a DC Comics film as J.K. Simmons in Justice League, and he will be played by Jeffrey Wright in The Batman.
We don’t know the premise of the movie, but we do know some of the creative minds behind it. Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, the filmmaking pair behind Bad Boys for Life, will direct Batgirl. Cristina Hodson, who also wrote Bumblebee, Birds of Prey, and the upcoming The Flash, will pen the script.

Leslie Grace reportedly beat out Isabella Merced (Sicario: Day of the Soldado), Zoey Deutch (Zombieland: Double Tap), and Haley Lu Richardson (Support the Girls) for the role, but according to Deadline, it was her performance in this summer’s musical blockbuster In the Heights that helped her land the part.
There’s no indication on when Batgirl will be released, but if it does, it’ll be available to see on HBO Max rather than in cinemas.
