Johnny depp accuses ex-wife, Amber heard, of bullying him
Johnny Depp trial: Following two days of testimony in his $50 million (£38.2 million) defamation lawsuit against his ex-wife, lawyers for Amber Heard cross-examined Johnny Depp for an entire day on Thursday. The trial has now been adjourned for a third week and will resume on Monday at the Fairfax County Courthouse in Virginia. Depp is suing Heard for implying in a 2018 op-ed that he abused her.
Despite the fact that she did not name him, he claims her allegations have made it difficult for him to land film roles, transforming him from “Cinderella to Quasimodo” in Hollywood.
The actor has testified about growing up with an abusive mother, claiming that his relationship with Heard mirrored that, describing her as “bullying” him. Heard’s lawyers confronted him on Thursday regarding obscene text messages he sent about her, as well as his drug and alcohol addiction.
Depp’s acquaintance with British actor Paul Bettany was brought up during cross evidence by Heard’s lawyer Benjamin Rottenborn. ‘Paul Bettany is a good friend you’ve done drugs with?’ Rottenborn asked. ‘That’s an odd question,’ Depp responded. Depp then admitted to drinking alcohol with him, using cocaine with him, and taking medications with him. Depp and Bettany have been friends for a long time, and they co-starred in the 2014 sci-fi film Transcendence and the 2015 action comedy Mortdecai.
Rottenborn read out texts Depp sent to Bettany on June 11, 2013. One of them read: ‘Let’s burn Amber!!!’ Rottenborn asked Depp: ‘You see that?’
In a low voice, he responded: ‘I do see that.’
Rottenborn said: ‘You didn’t stop. The next text down says: ”Let’s drown her before we burn her!!!” I read that right?’
Depp said: ‘Yes.’
Rottenborn said: ‘I’d like to apologize to the court and the jury for some of the language I’m going to use.’ He read the next text Depp sent to Bettany which read: ‘I will f**k her burnt corpse afterward to make sure she is dead.’
Rottenborn said: Did I read that right?
Depp said: ‘You certainly did.’
Rottenborn said: ‘You wrote that about the woman who would later become your wife.’
Depp said: ‘Yes.’
His account of his finger being severed in Australia was also contested, and photographs of words scrawled onto mirrors in blood and paint, as well as secretly taped disputes and fights, were exhibited in court. Depp also told the court that he thought Amber Heard and James Franco were having an affair.
