On Friday, Spain became the first team to qualify for the Euro 2020 semi-finals, followed by Italy later in the day.

Belgium vs. Italy in UEFA EURO 2020 Highlights: Italy defeated Belgium 2-1 in the Euro Cup quarterfinals in Munich on Friday night to advance to the semi-finals, where they will face Spain. In the 32nd minute, Barello scored the game’s first goal, and minutes later, Insigne extended the lead. At the stroke of halftime, Romelu Lukaku scored from a penalty.

So far, Italy has gone undefeated in the competition. They’ve set a new record for the longest winning streak in the competition, including qualifying. Insigne is coming off his most productive season, in which he scored 19 goals, although he has now scored in double digits in six consecutive seasons. Despite this, when Italy failed to qualify for the World Cup four years ago, an Italy squad in need of a goal in the second leg of its play-off against Sweden did not even bring him off the bench.

Spain vs. Switzerland in UEFA EURO 2020 Highlights: Following a valiant rearguard battle by a Swiss side reduced to ten men for over 40 minutes, Spain advanced on penalties. Denis Zakaria, who started in place of the injured Granit Xhaka, diverted a Jordi Alba attempt into his own goal after just eight minutes. On 68 minutes, Xherdan Shaqiri equalized against the run of play, as Remo Freuler seized on a farcical defensive mix-up between Aymeric Laporte and Pau Torres.

Freuler was sent off ten minutes later, leaving Switzerland with only ten men to hold out for 40 minutes. They held out for penalties thanks to sturdy defending and shocking Spanish profligacy in front of goal, only to miss three of their spot-kicks and exit the competition.

A word for Unai Simon: While we can only conjecture as to how much Spain’s goalkeeper got inside the thoughts of Switzerland’s penalty-takers, his repeated shimmying over and back across his goalline as they waited for the whistle and began their run-ups seems to have put a number of them off.
