Laptop screens already bend, so foldable screens seem like a natural progression.

The large 17-inch flexible display on the Asus Zenbook 17 Fold can be used with a keyboard or folded into a touchscreen laptop. Folding screen phones are a fascinating niche industry with a few flagship devices, such as the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3. Laptops with foldable screens are far more innovative. Only a few have gone on sale thus far, such as the Lenovo X1 Fold. The majority of the rest, such as Dell’s Ori idea, are still prototypes.
During its CES 2022 presentation, Intel revealed that it is working on a foldable laptop specification. While foldable screens aren’t new, they have yet to acquire popularity in the laptop market, which is surprising given that computers fold naturally. The first gadgets featuring folding display technology are expected to ship this year, according to Intel. Some very interesting technologies and form factors could be seen.
Asus is going right into the deep end of the pool at CES 2022, with a giant 17-inch folding OLED display named the Asus Zenbook 17 Fold, rather than an iPad-like 13-inch screen. “The world’s first 17.3-inch foldable OLED laptop,” according to Asus, which I believe because I feel I would have observed something similar. Intel’s Evo platform includes the specification. It’s simply a collection of specifications for tiny laptops with extended battery life, quick wake-up, and modern connectivity. Evo can be termed Ultrabook 2.0 in several regards.
This 2,560×1,920 touchscreen with a 4:3 aspect ratio can be propped up behind a bluetooth keyboard to simulate a 17-inch all-in-one desktop. It can also be folded in half to form a 12.5-inch clamshell laptop with an on-screen keyboard on the bottom half. Because Windows isn’t particularly good at this yet, there’s a bespoke software package for choosing which half of the foldable display different apps should appear on.
The system will have 12th-generation Intel processors, 16GB of RAM, 1TB of SSD storage, WiFi 6, and a 75Wh battery. Without the bluetooth keyboard, it weighs around 3.75 pounds, which sounds realistic. For reference, a 16-inch MacBook Pro weighs around 4.8 pounds. Looking at the spec sheet, my primary issue is that it only has one Thunderbolt port.
This is one of the products I’m kicking myself for not seeing in person at CES 2022. There’s no word on a pricing yet, but Asus says it will be available “mid-year” in 2022.
