England has been fined €30,000 (roughly £25,500) by Uefa for using a laser pointer and causing disruptions during the Danish national anthem after their Euro 2020 semi-final triumph. England advanced to the final after a 2-1 win in extra time at Wembley Stadium, where they will face Italy on Sunday, although the semi-final on Wednesday was marred by controversy.
In addition to a fan aiming a laser pointer at Kasper Schmeichel, home fans were heard booing the Danish national anthem, and Uefa fined the club for allowing fireworks to be set off. “The CEDB has decided to punish the English Football Association €30,000 for the use of a laser pointer, disturbances during national anthems, and the setting of fireworks,” Uefa said in a statement.
As Schmeichel prepared to face Harry Kane’s penalty, a fan aimed a laser pointer at him. Schmeichel saved the penalty kick, but Kane scored the rebound in the game’s final moments. UEFA also looked into the booing of the Danish national anthem before the game, which drew over 60,000 spectators, as well as the use of fireworks by some fans.

The match was telecast in the United Kingdom by ITV, which displayed footage of a green laser being pointed at Schmeichel’s face. ITV presenter Mark Pougatch stated, “Whoever they are, they’re an idiot… it’s stupid, and he doesn’t deserve it.” “No one wants to watch that kind of thing.” Following the event, the EFA’s on-site crew collaborated with UEFA to try to determine who utilized the laser device.
According to the English FA, “the Danish FA official acknowledged to the UEFA Match Manager that they did not desire to take the matter any further.” CNN Sport reached out to the Danish Football Union for comment, but they did not respond right away.
