At the official launch of his Mom’s Spaghetti restaurant in downtown Detroit on Wednesday, Eminem shocked guests by serving pasta.
Slim Shady aka Eminem himself was not expected, yet he arrived in a car and appeared in the serving window shortly after. The rapper’s restaurant takes its name from a phrase in Eminem’s 2002 single “Lose Yourself.”
In the song, Eminem raps, “His palms are sweaty, knees are weak, arms are heavy.” “Mom’s spaghetti, there’s vomit on his sweater already.”
Mom’s Spaghetti, a new restaurant in the artist’s birthplace of Detroit, opened on Wednesday. The concept restaurant began as a pop-up store in 2017 and is the result of a collaboration between Eminem’s team and a local restaurant business. According to a news release, Mom’s Spaghetti has since made appearances at multiple Eminem festival events and has supplied food to front-line hospital personnel and COVID-19 vaccinators in Detroit during the coronavirus outbreak.

The response from fans has been “overwhelmingly favorable,” according to Eminem’s manager, Paul Rosenberg, who described the prior pop-ups as “essentially a test for us to establish whether there was interest for a regularly-occurring Mom’s Spaghetti place that would be open all year.”
The menu is straightforward, with spaghetti (plain, with meatballs, or with vegan “rabbit balls”) and’sghetti sandwiches all priced around $15.
The Trailer is a merchandise and memorabilia business with a walk-up restaurant window and an upstairs merchandise and memorabilia store (in another nod to 8 Mile). According to the press release, the store is modest and “restricted to eight Stans” at a time.
Before the restaurant’s formal debut on Wednesday evening, a local commercial helped spread the news. According to the Detroit Free Press, several fans waited all day for a space in the queue, which eventually stretched for blocks.
And some lucky stans got more than just a box of pasta from the local takeout joint. Eminem made a surprise appearance, offering food and selfies to the first ten fans in line. The typically reclusive rapper and his crew then hopped into a pair of SUVs and sped away, “chased Beatlemania-style along Woodward by gangs of admirers,” according to the Detroit Free Press.
