It was unexpected news that briefly sparked a frenzy on social media and in the football community.

Elon Musk buying Manchester United-Joke or Truth?

Was the richest guy in the world planning to purchase Manchester United? Elon Musk, who Forbes estimates to have a net worth of $270 billion (£223 billion), tweeted just after 1:00 BST on Wednesday, “Also, I’m buying Manchester United ur welcome.”

The American’s post received more than 400,000 likes, causing social media chaos. For United, the beginning of the new season has been tough. After two losses, they are in last place in the Premier League, top player Cristiano Ronaldo may depart, and fresh signings aren’t working out.

After a “humiliatingly awful” start to the season, their fans are restless, and earlier this week the Manchester United Supporters Trust stated it will “demand answers” from those in charge of the team.

Since Sir Alex Ferguson stepped down as manager in 2013, the club has been in decline, and the Glazer family, who have controlled it since 2005, has come under fire. Numerous demonstrations against the Glazers’ ownership have taken place recently, notably one in May 2021 that resulted in the postponement of Manchester United’s game versus Liverpool.

During Monday’s matchup with their bitter rivals, United supporters will stage a new protest against the American family. Some supporters applauded Musk’s involvement in their team, which Forbes valued earlier this year at $4.6 billion (£3.8 billion).

Ryan Babel, a former winger for both Liverpool and the Netherlands, sensed a chance.
