Danushka Gunathilaka, a batter for Sri Lanka, has been accused of sexually assaulting a spectator at the T20 World Cup in Australia.

In a Sydney court, Danushka Gunathilaka was refused bail and accused with four charges of having sexual contact without consent. At the team hotel on Sunday morning just before 1:00 local time, Gunathilaka, 31, was taken into custody.
On November 2nd, he allegedly sexually assaulted a woman who was 29 years old. The arrest occurred shortly after Sri Lanka’s World Cup match against England on Saturday, which ended in a four-wicket loss for Sri Lanka.
“SLC will closely follow the judicial proceedings and, in consultation with the ICC, will swiftly launch an extensive investigation into the incident and take serious punishment against the player if found guilty,” it states.
On October 20, Gunathilaka’s injury forced him to withdraw from the competition, but he had stayed in Australia with the team. According to New South Wales police, he met the woman after exchanging messages with her for a period of days on a dating app.
The International Cricket Council informed Sri Lanka Cricket that player Danushka Gunathilaka had been detained on suspicion of sexually assaulting a lady in Sydney. Mr. Gunathilaka is scheduled to appear in court tomorrow, according to a statement from Sri Lanka Cricket (7 November).
