Bowser will be played by Jack Black. This isn’t a joke, believe it or not.
If you’ve been burned by Mario movies in the past, the star-studded ensemble may assuage your fears. Mario will be played by Chris Pratt, Bowser will be played by Jack Black, Donkey Kong will be played by Seth Rogen, and Peach will be played by Anya Taylor-Joy.
Nintendo Direct events are usually focused on new Switch titles, but one of the most significant revelations from Thursday’s event wasn’t about a game at all. Nintendo is collaborating with the studio behind Despicable Me to release a new Mario film on December 21, 2022.
“It’ll be a while until we get to see Mario in action on the big screen,” said Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto, who then revealed the cast of the film. Miyamoto gushed about Pratt, calling him “very amazing,” and promising Black a “monster performance” as Bowser.
“”It’s a highly collaborative production between Illumination and Nintendo,” Miyamoto explained, “and I’ve been enjoying a creative process that’s a little different from developing games.” We may not be able to provide any further updates for some time, but we hope you will be patient.”

The casting of Pratt sparked a flurry of responses on social media. There was also significant skepticism that Mario would not be played by Charles Martinet, the voice of Mario in Nintendo’s video games. Martinet, on the other hand, will have a surprise role in the film, according to Miyamoto.
