Flooding up to the chest level has damaged China’s railways and highways. In China, record-breaking rainfall flooded underground train tunnels, trapping passengers. Twelve people died as a result of the rising waters.
Evening commuters are barely keeping their heads above water in a video published on social media. Water can be seen pouring onto the platforms. Officials reported that more than 500 individuals were eventually rescued from the tunnels in Henan province.
According to state-run media, more than 100,000 people have been evacuated from Zhengzhou, a metropolis of 12.6 million people on the banks of the Yellow River, with thousands of emergency workers sent to aid in the endeavor. According to provincial authorities, all of the victims were retrieved from the city’s subway system. Days of rain have caused significant damage and forced 200,000 people to flee their homes.
Roads have been turned into rivers, with automobiles and trash being pushed along by fast-moving currents. Several pedestrians needed to be saved. A total of more than a dozen cities in Henan province have been impacted.
On Wednesday, President Xi Jinping stated there had been “severe loss of life and property damage.”
Though flooding in parts of China occurs every year during the summer, recent record-breaking rains have frightened scientists and authorities, raising concerns about whether the country is equipped to deal with more intense and unpredictable weather exacerbated by climate change.
Several dams and reservoirs have exceeded their alert levels, and soldiers have been dispatched to reroute rivers that have overflowed their banks. Flights and railroads have also been halted in various districts of Henan.
In just three days, the equivalent of a year’s average rainfall fell in Zhengzhou, the province capital. Some of the city’s flood defenses were breached on Tuesday, and water began to flow into the railway tunnels.
Parents lifted their children out of the water, while others threw off anything that could hold them down.
Children had to be evacuated from a flooded nursery school in another part of the central Chinese metropolis. Rescuers floated them out in plastic tubs, as seen by state television.
