On Sunday, BTS won the title for best K-pop at the MTV Video Music Awards 2021. (Sept. 12).

Because BTS was unable to accept the prize in person at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, the South Korean septet presented their acceptance statement via video after singing a sample of “Butter.”

“Thank you for this honor; we’re sorry we weren’t able to attend; hopefully next time,” they added before saluting their passionate fan base, the ARMY. “Shoutout to ARMY! You’re the best people in the world. We’ll keep bringing excellent music to all of you guys. Love you all!”

“Butter” not only debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, where it returned last week (chart dated Sept. 11) after 10 weeks (and counting) at the top, but it also won Song of the Summer this year. The K-pop boy band had won the award for group of the year earlier that night at the pre-show party, with a stunning 25 million votes submitted.

Justin Bieber + the Kid LAROI, Lil Nas X + Jack Harlow, Alicia Keys + Swae Lee, Shawn Mendes + Tainy, Machine Gun Kelly + Travis Barker, and others will perform at the 2021 VMAs, which will be hosted by Doja Cat. While accepting the K-pop prize, they also sang Butter.

BTS took home four trophies last year, including Best Group, Best Pop, Best K-Pop, and Best Choreography. They competed against BlackPink, Ariana Grande, Justin Bieber, Foo Fighters, Jonas Brothers, and Maroon 5 among others this year.

Meanwhile, Justin Bieber’s Giveon for Peaches won Best Pop Song, Olivia Rodrigo won Best New Artist and Song of the Year, Billie Eilish won Video for Good for her ballad Your Power, and Travis Scott took up Best Hip-Hop for Franchise (featuring Young Thug & M.I.A.).
