Since being released from a conservatorship that governed practically every area of her life, Britney Spears has released her first new music.
Spears made her comeback to music on Friday with the release of Hold Me Closer, a duet with Sir Elton John. Before the album’s release, she remarked, “It’s pretty damn cool that I’m singing with one of the most classic men of our time.
It’s a big issue to me, so I’m a little overwhelmed. Over a summery party groove, the song combines three of Sir Elton John’s timeless hits: Tiny Dancer, The One, and Don’t Go Breaking My Heart.
It is challenging to judge how Spears’ voice has altered since we last heard her because she and Sir Elton sing in sync throughout the entire track with their voices bathed in echo.
She does, however, indulge in a few ad libs, one of which is a signature “baby” halfway through the song, which shows that her vocals have deepened and developed over the past six years. (An unproven fan theory claims that Britney naturally sings in this range and that her prior managers made her perform in a “false baby voice” instead.)
Sonically, Hold Me Closer is very similar to Cold Heart, the Sir Elton John and Dua Lipa duet that was the world’s number one smash last year. This combination won over numerous radio formats and streaming playlists, making Sir Elton’s classics accessible to a younger demographic.
It’s not surprising that he’s attempting to recapture the enchantment on this follow-up, which likewise combines two distinct musical periods with the two stars singing evocative melodies over airbrushed disco rhythms. A press statement claims that the song was originally intended to be a solo tune before inspiration struck.
“When we directly reached out to Britney, she said yes right away, and the outcome is shaping up to be the song of the summer,” Earlier this week, Sir Elton sang along to the song while a DJ played it for customers at a French beach restaurant.
The celebrity remarked, “I am beyond grateful to have had the opportunity to work with Britney Spears. “She is unquestionably an icon and one of the greatest pop stars of all time, and she sounds fantastic on this album. She is the love of my life, and I am proud of what we have accomplished together.”
