British left-back Ben Chilwell’s World Cup participation is in jeopardy after pulling his hamstring during Chelsea’s victory over Dinamo Zagreb in the Champions League.

Ben Chilwell: Chelsea left-back injured, doubts for England at the world cup

During extra time, the 25-year-old defender Ben Chilwell pulled up while gripping the back of his leg. At full time, with the Blues leading 2-1, he was unable to continue and had to be assisted off the field.

Graham Potter, the manager of Chelsea, stated, “It doesn’t seem good. “I think it’s a setback for us in an otherwise fantastic evening. To see him pull up like that is a disappointment; it’s not a pretty sight.

So, we’re crossing our fingers that the scan results won’t be bad or severe, but for the time being, we have to hope for the best. We are obviously disappointed, though.

Heartbreak so close to the world cup:

On BT Sport, Glenn Hoddle, a former England manager, said: “I feel terrible for Ben Chilwell. A hamstring can occasionally give you a small warning indication. When that happens, raise your hand.

“That one simply left. He grimaces and appears to be in severe pain as he touches the ball. It appears to be a bad one. Why they haven’t taken him away baffles me.

“What a blow,” I said. I feel terrible for him.

Given how near the World Cup is, former Chelsea and England midfielder Joe Cole said he felt for Chilwell. He described it as “heartbreaking” on BT Sport. “The moment that occurs, all you can think about is how near the World Cup is.
