Atletico Madrid confirm signing of Antoine Griezmann from FCB

Atletico Madrid announced that they have reached an agreement to sign French forward Antoine Griezmann from Barcelona on a permanent basis with a term that runs until 2026. After a rocky stint at Camp Nou following his 120 million euro (116.5 million USD) signing in 2019, Griezmann has been on loan at Atletico since August 2021.

Griezmann has a contract with our club that lasts through June 30, 2026, according to a statement released by Atletico on Monday. The 2018 World Cup champion was a key player in Diego Simeone’s plans last season, but he has mostly been used as a substitute this year as Atletico Madrid wanted to avoid having to pay a rumored 40-million-euro purchase fee if he played more than a predetermined number of games.

Griezmann wanted to play more because the World Cup was coming up, so Atletico and Barcelona negotiated a new contract. Barcelona president Joan Laporta announced the cost at the club’s members assembly on Sunday.

Laporta stated, “It is for 20 million euros plus four more in variables. Another provision in the agreement to sell the player states: “If Atletico decides to sell the player in the future, they will have to pay us the difference that remains, up to the value of the 40 million which was previously negotiated.”

The price of the new contract was not made public by Atletico. Over the course of his two stays in the city, Griezmann has played 303 times for the team and scored 144 goals.

He scored 35 goals in 102 games with Barcelona, where he also won the Copa del Rey in 2021.
